Rule 10: Don’t Just Do Something, Stand There

At age twenty-four the cloistered life wasn’t fitting me anymore. We were all meditating to transcend human suffering, but I wanted to get down with it, roll around in it, be more hands-on. I broke my vows, got a burger and a boyfriend. By twenty-nine I was knee-deep in the world of money. I figured maybe the answer was to make a bunch of dough – maybe money would help reduce human suffering. But in the hurly-burly of making my way in business…I let go of much of my spiritual practice. I stopped meditating for seven years, tumultuous years when the bursting of the tech bubble caused thousands around me to lose their jobs and I had to counsel CEOs through difficult transitions – laying off staff, liquidating assets. Sheer will and perseverance got me through. Spirituality would’ve helped a lot more.
